            After the deposition of the miaphysite champion Severus of Antioch, Paul, originally a presbyter at the church of Mart Euphemia in Chalcedon, was appointed patriarch of Antioch in 519. His uncompromising pro-Chalcedonian attitude and his policy of persecution led the miaphysites to refer to him as "the Jew". Justin I deposed him in 521 because of the unrest he caused.
