Founded in the second half of the fifth century by the eponymous monk, this anti-Chalcedonian monastery, located close to the cities Callinicum and Sura on the Euphrates, was the abode of the bishop John of Sura in the 560s and 570s, as is attested in Joh. Eph., EH 4.22.
