John originated from the village of Sirimis/Sirmin to the south-east of Antioch. He enjoyed a legal education (hence his title Scholasticus) and is famous for his compilation of canon law. As priest, he was sent to Constantinople as the ambassador of the patriarchate of Antioch and made patriarch of Constantinople on 1 February 565.
