Anonymous 5240 - An officer of the spatharius Narses

Joh. Eph., EH 6.31, recounts that the spatharius Narses, on his way as envoy to the Avars, fell ill and died after one of his ships carrying all the gold went down in the Black Sea. This ship carried also one of the magistri, high-ranking army officers, belonging to his party.1
