“ܒܩܰܠܘܢܝܩܝ ܒܓܶܒ ܢܗܰܪ ܒܰܐܠܚ. ܕܰܝܪܐ ܕܢܰܦܝ̣ܩ ܫܡܗ ܘܒܶܗ ܐܶܬܥܰܢܘܝ̣ ܝܘܚܰܢܢ ܕܬܶܠܐ ܫܢܰܬ 508 ܘܐܶܬܢܰܦܩ ܝܘܚܰܢܢ ܪܒܝܥܳܝܳܐ ܘܐܰܪܒܥܳܐ ܘܥܶܣܪܝܢ ܐܶܦܝܣܩܘܦ̈ܐ ܥܕܰܡܐ ܠܰܫܢܰܬ 954 ܫܪܳܐ ܒܗ ܒܚܰܕ ܝܽܘܡ ܗܰܐܪܘܢ ܪܰܫܝܕ ܘܰܒܣܶܡ ܠܗ ܘܰܥܒܰܕ ܛܳܒ̈ܬܐ ܠܐܢܳܫ̈ܰܘܗܝ.” 2
“بالرقة وعلى جانبيه نهرالبليخ كان ديراً عظيماً ذائعاً صيته فيه ترهب يوحنا التلي سنة 508 وتخرد يوحنا الرابع وعشرون اسقفاً حتى سنة 954 نزل به يوماً هارون الرشيد فاستطابه وبرّ اهله.” 3

“in al-Raqqa, surrounded by the Balikh river. It was once a great and famous monastery; John of Talla became a monk there in 508. From this monastery graduated Patriarch John IV and twenty bishops, but it declined after 954. The Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid visited it one day, liked it and bestowed favors on its monks.” 4
Notes
In Dolabani's translation of Barsoum's description “ܘܐܶܬܢܰܦܩ” and “ܘܐܰܪܒܥܳܐ” should read
“ܘܶܐܬܢܰܦܩ” and “ܘܰܐܪܒܥܳܐ” respectively.
