“An important Christian pilgrimage site in late antiquity as it was believed to be the place where Moses received the ten commandments from God. Justinian erected a fortified monastic complex between 548 and 565. Gregory, patriarch of Antioch from 570 to 592, was archimandrite of this monastery prior to his accession as patriarch.” 7
