“One of the largest guesthouses and hospitals supporting the poor in Constantinople, it was already fully functioning at the start of Justinian's reign. Located close to Hagia Sophia, it was destroyed during the Nika riots in 532, rebuilt and further endowed by the emperor. Joh. Eph., EH 1.42, mentions that prior to his accession as patriarch, Menas of Constantinople (536-552) had been the leader of this hospice.” 4
